Natural Flavoring (Alcohol-Based)
Also known as: Vanilla Extract
Pure vanilla extract and some natural flavorings use alcohol as a carrier solvent; scholars differ on trace/evaporated alcohol.
Why?
Many flavor extracts, most notably pure vanilla extract, use ethanol as a solvent to carry flavor compounds. Most of the alcohol evaporates during baking or manufacturing, but trace amounts can remain. Scholars differ on whether such incidental, non-intoxicating trace alcohol renders a product haram: some permit it if the alcohol is not for intoxication and present only in trace amounts, others avoid it entirely as a matter of caution. Imitation/artificial vanilla flavoring is typically alcohol-free and less doubtful.
Good to know
Check for 'alcohol-free' or 'imitation vanilla' as lower-doubt alternatives.
