Why?

Carmine (E120) is a red dye extracted from the dried bodies of the female cochineal insect. Because it is not derived from a slaughtered animal but from an insect, scholars are divided: some classify insects as permissible without requiring zabihah slaughter, while others avoid it out of caution. Given this disagreement, it is best treated as doubtful pending the user's own school of thought or a trusted certifier's ruling.
