Sulphites (Sulfur Dioxide)
Also known as: E220
Mineral-derived preservatives used in dried fruit and wine; halal.
Why?
Sulphites are mineral-based preservative gases and salts used to prevent browning and microbial spoilage in dried fruits, wine, and processed potatoes. They are produced from sulfur, not from alcohol, so their presence does not by itself make a product haram.
Good to know
Common on labels as 'contains sulphites' — this is usually an allergen warning, not a halal concern.
