Lactic Acid

Also known as: E270

Mushbooh (Doubtful)

An acid that can come from dairy or plant fermentation; status depends on the growth medium used.

Why?

Lactic acid is produced by fermenting sugars (from corn, beets, or dairy whey) with bacteria. Most modern lactic acid is plant/microbial in origin and considered halal, but the fermentation growth medium occasionally includes animal-derived nutrients, which manufacturers rarely disclose on packaging.

Good to know

Treated as mushbooh by default when the source and growth medium are not specified.
