Tartaric Acid

Also known as: E334

Halal

A natural acid recovered as a winemaking byproduct; halal.

Why?

Tartaric acid (and cream of tartar, its potassium salt) is most commonly recovered as crystalline sediment from wine and grape juice production. Although it originates in a winery, the compound itself is not alcohol and undergoes a chemical transformation (istihalah) that most scholars consider sufficient to make the purified acid halal.
