Cellulose (Microcrystalline / Methylcellulose)

A plant-fiber-based thickener and anti-caking agent; halal.
Why?
Cellulose and its derivatives (microcrystalline cellulose, methylcellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose) are extracted from wood pulp or cotton fiber and used as bulking agents, thickeners, and anti-caking agents. They are entirely plant-derived.
Good to know
Occasionally used in vegetarian capsule shells as a halal-friendly alternative to gelatin.
