Sorbitan Esters (Sorbitan Monostearate)

Also known as: E491

Mushbooh (Doubtful)

Emulsifiers made from sorbitol and fatty acids, whose fatty-acid source is often undisclosed.

Why?

Sorbitan esters are produced by combining sorbitol with fatty acids to create emulsifiers used in baked goods, whipped toppings, and cake mixes. As with E471, the fatty acid used may be animal- or plant-derived, and this is rarely stated on packaging.

Good to know

Treated as mushbooh by default absent a specified plant source.
