E542
Also known as: Bone Phosphate, Edible Bone Phosphate
Derived from animal bones, most often cattle; halal status depends on the source animal and slaughter method.
Why?
E542 is an anti-caking and emulsifying agent made from ground animal bones, typically cattle. As with other bone- and fat-derived additives, it is halal only if sourced from a halal-slaughtered animal and haram if from pork; the source is rarely disclosed on consumer packaging.
Good to know
Uncommon in retail food but appears in some supplements and processed foods.
