Magnesium Stearate

A very common tablet/supplement lubricant with animal-or-plant sourcing ambiguity.

Why?

Magnesium stearate is used as an anti-caking and flow agent in the vast majority of tablets, capsules, and powdered supplements. Like other stearate-based additives, its fatty acid source can be animal (often bovine) or vegetable, and this is almost never disclosed on the label.

Good to know

Because it appears in so many vitamins and medications, many halal-conscious consumers specifically look for supplements labeled 'vegetable-sourced magnesium stearate.'
