Vanillin (Imitation Vanilla)

Also known as: Vanillin

Halal

A synthetic vanilla flavor made without alcohol; halal.

Why?

Vanillin is the primary flavor compound in vanilla, produced synthetically (often from wood pulp byproducts or petrochemicals) rather than extracted from vanilla beans in alcohol. Because it doesn't rely on an alcohol-based extraction like traditional vanilla extract, imitation vanilla / vanillin is generally considered halal without qualification.

Good to know

Compare with the Alcohol-Derived Flavoring (Vanilla Extract) entry in this glossary, which covers the traditional alcohol-based version.
